Artist’s Statement- “Broken Reflections”
Coming into art, I have always used it as a form of expression that was being oppressed in me from a very young age. As a child I was adopted into a very strict household that cared a lot about image. However, now that I’m older, I have learned that art can express lessons, values, and memories as well. This series is all about the latter. Within this series I have displayed mirrors in past homes or locations, these photos represent important memories of my past. These are key components of my past that have contributed to who I am today. The key point of this series is the reflection itself. I used to have a fear of looking in the mirror, and I tried to avoid them at all costs. As a child, I thought they didn’t matter, as a preteen I was scared of what the mirror showed me, and as I neared adulthood, I saw the person I pretended to be for the world instead of the person I truly was. Eventually, that grew tiresome and I realized there was no need for me to care for others opinions. Growing out of that has taught me to love myself, accept all that I am, and embrace my flaws.
This has meant a lot to me, as I try my hardest to grow into the young woman I’ve always wanted to be. And now, I’m showing you my mirrors so that you can see my growth as well. Pay close attention to the order, and closer attention to the locations and background. There you can interpret my growth. There are five photos in total, for the age in which I moved to Tennessee. But why are my mirrors broken? I believe I have shattered every stigma that came with my background, and I believe I have grown into the person I never thought I would be; someone to be proud of.
- Lowering or raising the levels to get my desired exposure.
- Raising the temperature to give a more sunny look.
- Adding yellow to the highlights to accentuate the sunny look.
- Lowering the saturation.
- Adding the overlay to each mirror.
- Then choosing the "multiply" overly to give the most realistic effect.
Your meaning behind all these mirrors is truly inspiring. For you being able to look at them now and realize you are worthy and deserve all the world makes me want to give you a big hug! I also like the over lay you did with each image. It played well with your concept.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed this series of photos! The way you captured your own image inside the photo makes it more personal. In addition, I think the broken mirror overlay made each of your photos more relatable to what you wrote in your abstract. Well done!
