For this assignment, since we were locked in due to the snow, me and my roommate Madison decided to use her as my model in a series of photographs. Here is the result.
Depth of Field:
With these photos, I experimented with depth of field. In the first Photo my goal was to show a shallow depth of field in showing the detail of the trees and Madison blurry in the background. I edited this photo by adding yellow to the highlights, green to the shadows, and upping the saturation of the red in her jacket. The second photo I tried keeping the depth more mid ranged to deep. Keeping the edge of the building in focus and the sky and trees in blur. I edited this photo by adding brown to the shadows and blue in the highlights. Then I added saturation in red and yellow to bring out the orange in the building.
In this photo however, I wanted the blur to be gradual. starting with a shallow field, my goal was to slowly see the blur increase as it went further into the distance. You can see this when you noticed that her jacket is more in focus than her face, and the background is more intensely out of focus. This photo was edited similarly to the first with yellow highlights and saturated reds. but with this photo I made the shadows red as well to bring out the building.
This photo was the best I could do to show an example of infinite depth of field. You can notice that the building in the background is clearly in focus as well as the tree in the foreground. This photo was edited with yellow highlights and blue shadows, as well as saturation added in cyan, blue, and red to bring out Madison's clothes as well as the sky behind her.

Motion:
This photo was actually an accident. After we did the photos like the one below, I forgot to switch my camera settings before taking this photo so when she moved we captured it, it then turned out to be my favorite. I edited it by adding yellow to the highlights and magenta to the shadows, giving her a fire side look that I enjoy. This photo was the original favorite from the shoot. I burned the chest area that was a little too bright and dodged the she movement highlights to exaggerate the blur. I then added yellow highlights but did not like the saturation of it so I toned the yellow down.
These two photos where taken the last time bethel had snow. I figured they would be perfect for this challenge as these are the only snowy photos where I could capture the snow stilled. I gave the red and yellow of this photo saturation and then added green shadows to balance the red.
This photo I brought in yellow saturation and green shadows to help bring the bushes out. This gave an over all better look in my opinion. however, I still wish I could bring out the bushes a bit more.
The idea for Madison's moving photos came from this article
Well done. I'm particularly fond of the motion effects you managed and your color editing choices.
ReplyDeleteI really love how your subject is wearing a red coat in the depth of field photos. I feel this makes her stand out even if she is not the main focus. Your photo that used to show an infinite depth of field is my favorite because I really like how your roommate and the tree color stands out. I love how for your first two motion photos in my opinion gives off a retro vibe. Great Job!
ReplyDeleteI think you did a great job with working with motion. You were able to keep most of the picture still with the shot of motion perfectly blurry. In your pictures that you were able to capture the snow was done really well. It reminds me of a little piece of life frozen in time. This is something that I struggled with in my photos and would love to know how you completed this so well! Wonderful work!
