Introductions - Kylie Carroll

Hello! My name is Kylie Carroll, and I am a Newly declared art major. I do many different arts and consider myself a jack of all trades. I have a fur baby named Theo. I enjoy my screen time as well as writing. If you're interested, I'll attach my Wattpad link to my poetry novel titled "Walking away from you" that I have been invested in creating over the past few years. I will, however, include a disclaimer that the novel is not for the weak for there is a trigger warning. Either way, I hope you enjoy my content and I look forward to working with you in this semester.

Broken Reflections: Final

Artist’s Statement- “Broken Reflections” Coming into art, I have always used it as a form of expression that was being oppressed in me from a very young age. As a child I was adopted into a very strict household that cared a lot about image. However, now that I’m older, I have learned that art can express lessons, values, and memories as well. This series is all about the latter. Within this series I have displayed mirrors in past homes or locations, these photos represent important memories of my past. These are key components of my past that have contributed to who I am today. The key point of this series is the reflection itself. I used to have a fear of looking in the mirror, and I tried to avoid them at all costs. As a child, I thought they didn’t matter, as a preteen I was scared of what the mirror showed me, and as I neared adulthood, I saw the person I pretended to be for the world instead of the person I truly was. Eventually, that grew tiresome and I realized there was...

Assignment 4: Special Edits.

With this first photo, I took a prism and placed it in front of the lens, creating a reflection effect.    With this photo, I  placed a pink camera lens filter on, then used my hand to create shadows on her face. In this photo, I took my phone and used it as a mirror to reflect her face.   This photo is a triple exposure that we learned in class, I do wish I could have made it more clear, however Madison could not stay still enough. Here we took the light and used light writing to create a figure toughing Madison's hand This photo was used as light writing. we kept it vertical to balance the wide angle. With this photo we tried normal light writing, as you can see it did not turn out. This last photo turned out to be my favorite. It started out as normal light writing to give Madison a halo. However we forgot to add a flash of light in the end and I think it turned out better than it would have if I had remembered. In the end, I ended up doing very little...

Assignment 3: Portrait Series

Series Title: I am a Woman      When coming up with a series, I toyed with several concepts that where great. I ended up choosing this one based simply on the fact that I had more than enough models. In the end this has become a very loved series that I am very proud of, so let me introduce you. This series is titled "I am a Woman". The theme and concept of these photographs was to show women in such a way that you perceive them as innocent. Then each of these women where told to bring their self defense weapon and hold it for the photograph. Initially, I wanted to display these weapons as the center of the photographs, but I figured out very soon that the girls are the real stars here. Either way, these photos where meant to show the view of a predator, as most of them view women as weak, innocent, or Etc. I chose to take these photos to display the need for weapons amongst us women as we are viewed in this way, and are easily targeted.  I conceptualized this ...

Lighting: Product Photos

Today I decided to play around with lighting while taking photos of jewelry to sell on eBay.  I started by creating an aesthetically pleasing background out of antique paper and other props that matched. Then I placed the jewelry in the focal spot I chose as well as taking photos of the individual pieces in-front of a different focal point.  These photos are unedited, showing that I definitely struggled with focusing my camera and getting the right angel.   My set up was very janky, including a DIY soft box for my flash, but the outcome was as close as I could get to professional photos.

New York/ Adobe light room

So, if anyone knows me they would know that I am in love with New York. About a year and half ago my mom decided she would finally take me there. As a result I photographed the whole city, and I thought I would share some with you!  I photographed all of these using my phone camera, usually in portrait mode to have a focal point. Even though I did not have a fancy camera at the time I still believe I created some interesting photos.  All of these photos I edited using Adobe Photoshop: Lightroom . These photos in particular I used a preset created by a photographer on Instagram who’s name I have completely lost from my phone. However, I do have the original preset photograph that shows you how to get the same effect . This is probably my favorite effect to use on photos, as you can probably tell from my main Instagram. However, the filter does create some artifacts you can see in the photos above. This can be avoided by changing detail and sharpening levels, but I quiet ...

Man Ray : Photographer

So upon my research in to famous photography, I could only find a select few that really struck my eyes. One of which is an American visual artist named Man Ray or  Emmanuel Radnitzky As a visual artist he created photography pieces that looked quiet like paintings themselves. What intrigued me the most was the resemblance of some of his work to the surrealists artist, Salvador Dali. An artist that is also one of my favorites. These men show an art that sort of disturbs the ideal of reality and in turn give a new look to their art. Below is some of Man Ray’s work as a photographer.. Noire et Blanche Long Hair Solarisation Observatory Time: The Lovers Dora Maar  Glass Tears Tristan Tzara As you can see, his photography is black and white. He uses double exposure as well as many other techniques to give each piece a different mood as well as cool tone and sepia filters. I particularly like “Dora Maar” and “Long Hair” for the haunted feel that is portrayed to the viewers.  N...
